I was broken…I was depressed…I was angry, I hated my life and the people around me. I assumed I would end up in jail because my father, mother, grandmother, and everyone had been to jail; it was just part of life. I decided that I had to be the one to break the cycle so that my kids couldn’t say, “Well my mom didn’t graduate from high-school; my mom didn’t go to college; and my mom went to jail.” I wouldn’t have done it without Street School. Coming here made me see that I wasn’t the only kid with a sad story or who had a hard life. Being at Street School is therapeutic; they let you talk; you can feel it it’s going to be different. A lot of us come here dead, and they love you back to life. Spynn, 2016 Street School Graduate

Established in 1973, Street School combines alternative education and therapeutic counseling and is Oklahoma’s longest running and most successful dropout prevention and intervention program, serving over 6,000 students in its 42 years. Street School’s focus is youth who have dropped out or are on the verge of dropping out due to academics, abuse, neglect, bullying, drugs, pregnancy/teenage parenting needs and offers them a second chance to graduate.
During the 2016-2017 school year 136 students were served and 34 seniors graduated. Over the past 10 years 90% of our students, on average, have graduated. Jenny Fitzgerald, LCSW class of 1994 and current counselor states, “I was in college before I realized that I wouldn’t be here without them; Street School generates a system of empowerment that impacts students and changes their lives.”
